Studying in Italy is not a dream instead it is a popular study centre for all the international students. It offers quality education with economic tuition fees than all the remaining Western European Countries.

Why Study in Italy?

Italy is popularly known for its prestigious educational institutions and appears in the top 200 globally every year.

The ‘University of Bologna’ and ‘Padua’ are believed to be the oldest universities in the world, which were established in the year 1088 and 1222 respectively are in progress as on today.

Italians followed a procedure to improve the standards and provide quality higher educational qualifications for their students. They named this process as “The Bologna Process”, after the University of Bologna and signed by all the education ministers from 29 European countries in the year 1999 and later it was opened to all other countries.

Italy is bounded with 97 universities, which are categorized as-

  • State Universities: These are public institutions which are funded by the State government.
  • Other Publicly funded universities: These institutions are funded by the Province rather than State.
  • Private Universities: Non-funded by the state.
  • Superior Graduate Schools (Scuola Superiore Universitaria): These Universities are independent institutions. They offer specialization and advanced training courses for postgraduate students.

In Italy, there are nearly 137 other higher education institutions which offer specialized training in certain sectors like art, culture and technical institutions.

Having a desire is not enough for your successful study. You should be comfortable in your circle. So that it is better if you know about the different levels of higher education in Italy.

After acquiring a bachelor’s degree – ‘laurea’ which you can complete in 3 years you are eligible to step into you master’s degree – ‘Laurea magistrale’ which is for a year. After acquiring your masters’ degree you can do your PhD, which you can comfortably complete in three academic years.

It is good enough if you can understand the Italian language because many courses offered are in the Italian language. But the numbers of English language courses are increasing to facilitate global students.

  • The Colosseum: An oval amphitheatre located in the centre of the Roman City. It is also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre. It is the largest and the most famous amphitheatre built in the first century AD.
  • Canals of Venice: A popular attractive destination for tourists It is also known as “City of Canals,” “The Floating City,” “The City of Water”, Serenissima. There are many picturesque cities, winding canals, and amazing bridges. The Grand Canal is the biggest and it divides the city into two.
  • Pompeii: The city Pompeii was earthed by a volcano eruption and covered in ashes and soil in 79 AD. Later the city was unearthed accidentally in the year 1599 when a water tunnel was digging.
  • Leaning Tower of Pisa: It is also called Tower of Pisa, Bell Tower of Pisa. Its Italian name is “Torre Pendente di Pisa”. It is the smallest tower but got recognized worldwide because of its unintended tilt. There are nearly 251 steps and it weighs 14,500 tonnes.
  • Lake Como: This Lake is shaped like a reversed Y, and it is famous for its Victorian gardens and lakeshore restaurants and attractive villas which are constructed by Romans.

Cost of Living in Italy & Fee structures

The cost of tuition fee varies from institute to institute and also from a public to private institutions. On average you are supposed to spend €900 to €4,000 per year for a public institution to acquire a bachelor’s degree but as in private institutions, it costs €6,000 to €20,000 per year. Students from EU and EEA fee structures are equal to Italian citizens’ fee structure. All other international students are indeed expecting higher course fee structure.

There are options for you in supporting your financial aid. Italians and all other international students are eligible to apply for  financial help. You can receive your financial assistance depending on your financial situation and academic merit. If you are eligible for the financial aid providing by your institutions you can comfortably meet all your tuition fees, accommodation expenses and all other miscellaneous expenses. You can get more information from institutions you have admitted about the financial assistance they can offer you.

Italian institutions normally do not have any residential rentals halls for students; however, they offer services to find a place for you to stay. This may include private housing, university-owned housing. To be frank private renting is more expensive, so make sure that your financial support is good enough to support your stay.

Getting a part-time job is the best way to support you in Italy. As an EU student, you need not to get any additional permission. But if you are a non-EU student, your visa status clearly indicates whether you are permitted to have paid employment whilst you study. If you are permitted to work, you can work for 20 hours a week which is not sufficient for you to meet your expenses. If you are comfortable with Italian languages you can get a job which is helpful for the maintenance of your stay in Italy.

Visas

To study in Italy you need a visa. Except for students from EU or EFTA country (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland) all other international students need a visa. Students who are applying for the visa have to submit details regarding accommodation, particulars of financial stability and health insurance policy.

All the non-EU or EFTA students have to apply for a residence permit once their visa is approved. You have to complete this procedure within 8 days of your arrival in the country.  You can apply for your residence permit in the post office of your new city of residence. You can approach your institution for your further assistance.

Coming to the students from EU or EFTA country need not apply for a residence permit, but if they are supposed to stay for more than 3 months they must register with the Anagrafe(register office) in their city of residence. They can register as a temporary resident if they are not intended to move permanent residence to Italy. If they select this option they have to renew their registration every year. Another better option is they can transfer their permanent residence to Italy.

Students from EU country who plan to stay for more than three months for their studies have to register with the Italian National Health Service (SSN) to benefit the complete health coverage. They can apply for this in the Local Health Authorities (ASL). They need not pay any fee to get this health insurance card (Tessera Sanitaria). This, in fact helps them to enjoy health services like Italian citizens.

Non-EU students need health insurance in order to get a residence permit. There are three different options for them to approach.

  • By registering at their Local Health Authority (ASL)
  • They can purchase a private insurance policy in their own country. It is always suggestible to get this policy validated by the Italian authorities and get translated into either Italian or English.
  • Another option is that students can purchase a private health insurance policy in Italy before or after their arrival into the country, but they need to apply for a residence permit.

Language

Never limit yourself to one or two languages. If you want global reorganization you must be a multiple language speaker. To study in other countries along with English you must learn the native language of the country you are going to stay. For your comfortable stay and also to strengthen your CV you have to learn the Italian language.

If you feel that you are unable to follow the Italian language, you will be asked to provide language proficiency evidence. If you want to improve your skills or to provide your evidence certificate there are many institutions offering language courses.

If you choose to study in English, you can adjust yourself with the culture and traditions. But always remember that knowing the Italian language you will be benefitted and you can enjoy your stay.

Cities

Rome

Rome is the capital city of Italy. It is occupied by the 4.3 million residents which made it as a fourth populous city in the EU. Rome is rich in its culture and history which is a perfect city for international students and provides facilities for global students.

Rome is the home for the higher education centres boasting with many colleges, art centres, universities in different fields. For instance, University of La Sapienza is one of the largest universities in the world enrolled with 140,000 students. Rome is famous for Istituto Europeo di Design, Scuola Lorenzo de’, Rome Business School.

Milan

Milan, the capital of Lombardy is the second most populous city with 1.3 million residents after Rome.  It is the biggest industrial city with different industrial sectors like designing, art, photography and models. It has a great reputation as the economic capital of Italy. Milan boasts famous Opera houses in  Europe. The theatre is recognized as the world’s largest with more than 2000 seats.

Florence

According to UNESCO, The land of Florence occupies World’s third place for its art residents. Leonardo Da Vinci was born in Florence on 15th April 1452. The cathedral, Duomo took nearly 140 years to build. Famous nurse, Florence Nightingale was born in Florence. Red lily is its emblem and the musical instrument Piano was invented in Florence by Bartolomeo Cristofori.

You can see the University of Florence in the city along with other universities of arts and Polimoda International Institute Fashion Design and Marketing. Florence is a tourist place wherein nearly 10 million people visit every year.
